Cash boost for CMOS sensor research

The team over at Amateur Photographer is reporting that a cash boost awarded to scientists at the University of Glasgow could soon see breakthroughs in digital imaging.

The researchers have won £500,000 to investigate the sensitivity of CMOS sensors - the chips driving many of the DSLRs on the market today including the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II.

Says Press Association, the scientists will look at how to create 'patterns or small nanostructures in the metal film on the CMOS'.

In the long term, this could mean the team will find out ways to boost the imaging sensor's sensitivity to light and improve 'colour discrimination in images', explains PA.

The grant, which totals £489,234, was awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the scheme is backed by Oxford University.
