Mike Birbeck, David Bailey and Nick Park were among the winners at the Royal Photographic Society Awards. At a ceremony held at the Royal Institute, the Hood Medal was awarded to Mike Birbeck, President of the Disabled Photographers’ Society. His citation stated: ‘Mike has a passion for photography and a great affinity for those with a disability, as evidenced by his study of disabled school children, which gained him his FRPS.’ Birbeck’s engineering skills were also praised for enabling disabled people to use cameras through technical adaptations. Since it was first awarded in 1933, the Hood Medal has been awarded to Lord Snowdon, Richard Attenborough and Jacques Cousteau. It is presented to those who have shown ‘meritorious performance in some branch of photography, with particular emphasis on any exhibit, which revealed the most outstanding advance in photography for public service.’ For more information log onto www.rps.org.
