Re: Chaffinch These rate among the best bird pics I've ever seen, I'd love to know how you got these amazing pics as the Goldfinches where I live are not really approachable, the only way is with a long zoom and then the image is needing cropping which loses pixels. I love the Redpoll and the hen Chaffinch as I do all your pics. Love to know what gear you use. All the best, Mike.
Thanks for the lovely comments. I took the pictures at a local nature reserve where you can get quite close to the birds, I am pleased with the pictures as it was my first attempt at taking bird shots. I have a Nikon D300 and used a 80-400 lens (which I borrowed off a friend) and had the ISO up at 800 for this shot. a longer lens would have been better, but beggers can't be choosers as they say!
Re: Chaffinch Hi Kim. 1st attempt you say? WOW I'm all the more impressed. Re lenses, the 80-400 which you used, in film terms it equates to a 120-600mm which is the effect you see on your pics, this is because of the sensor (DX) in the D300 (I use one too), which crops the central portion of the image. Whatever lens you use, multiply its focal length by one and a half to give you the representative focal length. My Sigma 120-400 on the end of my camera is very heavy and leads to painful arms after hours of use, still it's worth it. Again, well done and keep it up!. Mike.
