I tend to think it's best to do this so I have a good understanding of how to control the camera and what it's capable of. I skip the bits where it tells you stuff about how to control the depth of field, selecting a faster shutter speed for a fast-moving subject etc etc. Then I'll start using it and only ever open the manual when there's something specific I need to figure out how to do.
