Sony NEX-VG10E boasts APS-C sensor and E-mount lenses for DSLR quality video

Sony has launched the NEX-VG10E, a camcorder which accepts both the e-mount lenses featured on the NEX-5 and Alpha a-mount lenses from full sized DSLRs. This new system is built around a 14.2MP HD sensor, which is able to shoot 1920 x 1080 high definition footage.

The APS-C sized chip makes it possible to achieve a similar level of sharpness and shallow depth of field that DSLRs have been managing within movie modes. Unlike a DSLR there’s very little in the way of restriction in terms of shooting length, and the video is shot at a 24 Mbps bit rate. The Sony NEX-VG10E comes boxed with an 18-200mm zoom lens with built-in optical image stabilisation and has a 3″ LCD screen.

With video capabilities on DSLR and hybrid cameras becoming closer to broadcast quality, even to the point that movies are being shot on them, it comes as no surprise that a camcorder taking advantage of the technology has made it to the market. A few years ago Canon’s XL system debuted offering DSLR lenses on a digital video body at an affordable price. Now that stills and video seem to be converging to some extent the camcorder may be due for a revival.
