Photoshop elements not allowing me to open a NEF file D5000
Hi all, hope you can help me.
I'm new to the digital world and need a bit of help.
I have recently purchased a D5000 and am running it fully auto at the moment until i am more comfortable with its operation. I have it set up to take NEF (RAW) + JPEG Normal
Now when i try and open a NEF (RAW) photo in PSE 7 i get a dialogue box telling me it ' Cannot open ... NEF because it is the wrong type of file.
Anyone else had this problem, hopefully there is a quick fix
I can open JPEG photo's without any problems
In advance cheers

I have a D5000 and had to download the latest Camera RAW to edit the NEF files. You need to follow the instructions, it's not just a case of downloading and double-clicking. you need to unzip the files then copy one of them to a specific location, over-writing an existing one (or moving the existing one just in case of problems....)

Now don't shout at me but.......I am new on here and have just a D5000 and have experienced the problem of opening RAW (NEF) files in photoshop. I went to the elements download page and looked under elements 6, my version, and there is no reference to my camera. There are several other Nikon's listed, so I downloaded one of the D700 I think it was. Anyway the upshot is, I unzipped the file and then when I ran it afterwards there appeared to be only one file there, no instructions for pasting things in and overwriting other files etc.
Anyone got a clue what I am doing wrong?

Hi John,
You need to download the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) from the Adobe website and follow the installation instructions.
I've just copied them from the Adobe website:
================================================== ====
To install with Adobe Photoshop Elements:
NOTE: You must follow all of the new instructions in order to successfully install the Camera Raw Plug-in for Photoshop Elements.
1. Exit Photoshop Elements
2. Open the download file and double-click CameraProfiles.exe and follow the on-screen instructions
3. Open My Computer
4. Double-click Local Disk (C: )
5. Navigate to the location designated by your version of Photoshop Elements: (Please read directory carefully)
a. Photoshop Elements 6.0: Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats
6. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
7. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 5.
8. Launch Photoshop Elements.

Adobe als do a digital raw coverter, that converts raw files into a universal raw file that can be opened in all programs.
Windows version is here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...jsp?ftpID=4679
