I have recently taken up photography (again, I used to play around with an old Canon film SLR a while back) and got a 650D for Christmas.

Today I have purchased a canon 80-200mm telephoto lens from a colleague at work, unfortunately the lens will not AF. I am unsure why this is, the camera is sensing through the lens an when on automatic mode shutter speed/aperture adjust as the camera is moved. However when the shutter release is pressed the camera does nothing; switching the camera to manual mode it works fine.

Now I only paid a nominal sum for the lens so I am not bothered about the issue from that perspective, I am just curious as to why this might be the case and if there is anything that can address the issue? The lens has a serial number of 4806225B if it helps.
