Default Canon 650d and second hand 80-200mm AF issue

    Hi all,

I have recently taken up photography (again, I used to play around with an old Canon film SLR a while back) and got a 650D for Christmas.

Today I have purchased a canon 80-200mm telephoto lens from a colleague at work, unfortunately the lens will not AF. I am unsure why this is, the camera is sensing through the lens an when on automatic mode shutter speed/aperture adjust as the camera is moved. However when the shutter release is pressed the camera does nothing; switching the camera to manual mode it works fine.

Now I only paid a nominal sum for the lens so I am not bothered about the issue from that perspective, I am just curious as to why this might be the case and if there is anything that can address the issue? The lens has a serial number of 4806225B if it helps.

    Thanks in advance!

    does your kit lens focus
if it does then the problem lies with the other lens, make sure it is switched to auto focus and clean the contacts

    Hi wave,

The kit lens is focusing and all contacts have been cleaned on the telephoto lens.
