Hungarian photographer Bence Mu00e1tu00e9 triumphs with 'A marvel of ants'

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year has been announced as Bence Máté, who won the Erik Hosking award with ‘A marvel of Ants’. The simple, silhouetted photo of a gathering of leaf cutter ants caught the judge’s eyes, and was part of a six image portfolio which won the overall prize.

In the Young Photographer category Fergus Gill came out on top with The Frozen moment, which captured a hovering bird in mid-flight. Speaking about Fergus’ winning image, zoologist and presenter Mark Carwardine said “The hovering fieldfare is posed as an artist might paint it, the delicate yellow of the frozen berries echoing its breast feathers. A winning gem of a picture.”

The images are available to be viewed by the public from October 22nd at the National History Museum, then touring internationally across various venues. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Portfolio 20 is available now for £25. More information can be found at www.nhm.ac.uk/wildphoto.
