Permajet has established a reputation for quality at competitive prices, and its ImageLife Alpha warm-base smooth matte lives up to this. From Permajet’s range we chose to test its ImageLife Alpha, a creamier-than-average smooth matte paper.

If you are looking for a warm base smooth matte, this paper should impress, with good technical test results showing a gamut space as good as the competition and very pleasing black density when printed using the Epson R2400’s K3 inks. Compared to the Hahnemühle Photo Rag, the Permajet paper has a smoother surface and a more flexible feel and, if fed one sheet at a time, might be more suitable for printers without a straight-through paper path.

Though Permajet is cheap, the company doesn’t currently offer free custom profiles, so da Vinci papers from Paperandinks.com, or Fotospeed papers with their free profiling offer might work out more economical in the long term.
