Dodge & Burn

Hi

Can anyone please explain the technique of DODGE & BURN in Photoshop. What does what, and how is it best used.
By the way i'm using CS3 and still learning.

Hi Gary
It's been a while since I used CS3. From what I can remember the burn and dodge tools weren't the greatest this tutorial should give you better results

Go Layer new layer in the box that comes up set mode to overlay and tick the box that says fill with 50% grey click ok. and select the overlay layer
Click on the burn tool select a soft brush set exposure to about 20% and paint on the dark parts of your photo always on the overlay layer
do the same with the dodge tool on the lighter parts then flatten your image
