Which body and lens to buy

I've got Canon EF35-80mm and EF 80-200mm kit lenses (They are autofocus) from a old EOS 3000 kit. I'm thinking of purchasing a 600D. The camera will be primarily for photography but I will need the video facilty for school concerts ect. Questions? Will my lenses work with the 600D? I'm considering a 18-200 particularly for video work and binning the kit lenses, what do you think? Will teleconverters work with zoom lenses? Or should I look at perhaps a prime or two and use my current lenses. I've got about a £1000 to spend.

Hi and welcome.

Both lenses will work with the 600D which we like on here. Both lenses will increase by a factor of 1.6 due to the sensor size.

Both kit lenses are rated as pretty good, but a lot depends on your skill in post processing (like sharpening etc) which is easy to learn. See the image editor and tutorials in my signature.

Teleconverters will work with zooms but they then need more light to work with. It also depends on the quality of the converter.

I don't like extreme zoom lenses like 18mm-200mm (which with a crop factor of 1.6 is 28.8mm-320mm) as it tries to do too much.

Like I said. You can enhance digital images with ease, so you don't have to pay a fortune for lenses.

Hi Stuart. I find that my 18-200mm Sigma lens is very capable and is my most used lens because its focal range almost covers most subjects. I also have a 10-20mm f3.5 ultra wide angle which is fine for groups shots in small spaces, and it's amazing how much can be crammed into the frame. For long shots I use my Sigma 120-400mm and I find the quality just great for Motor Cycle Racing, you can see some of my shots in the gallery of this subject. All the best. Mike.
