Canon’s latest superzoom camera, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS, comes with a huge 35x optical zoom. This impressive level of magnification puts this new model on a par with the likes of the Nikon P500 and Fujifilm HS20 by offering a large zoom lens in a relatively compact body. 

This new launch succeeds the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS, although few changes have been made to the listed features. The only major ditinction appears to be the sensor, which has taken a reduction in resolution from 14MP to 12MP but has added the HS technology. This allows the camera to take an increased amount of images per second and better quality shots in lower light.

The 2.7inch vari-angle screen reappears, as does the EVF, although no word if the latter has recieved an upgrade. The movie mode is in full, 1080p quality at 24 frames per second and the full manual controls are supplemented by 32 different scene modes. 

The HS sensor-fuelled burst mode can either take 8 images at 10.3fps or fill a card at 2.5fps, with both modes operating at full resolution. The lens begins at a wide angle of 24mm through to a telephoto of 840mm, and with the added bonus of USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) and Image Stabilization images should be free of hand shake.
