18MP water, freeze and drop proof Sony CyberShot DSC-TX200V debuts

Sony has announced a new tough compact, combining the attributes of a tough model with those of a thin, stylish camera. The CyberShot DSC-TX200V looks sleek and fashionable, but can withstand being dropped, frozen and dunked in water up to 16 feet (5 meters).

Replacing the TX100, the TX200V ups the megapixel quota to 18MP while reducing the size of the screen from 3.5inch to 3.3inch. This alteration comes with a shift to OLED from LCD though, which should improve the quality of the image preview. The screen is touch sensitive which, combined with the lack of buttons, makes the TX200V almost entirely devoid of physical controls.

Thanks to a 5x optical zoom the TX200V is also relatively versatile and, with a quoted 0.13 second autofocus speed in daylight, rapid at taking snaps as well. Full HD movie recording is present, during which still images can be taken at 13MP in a Dual-Record mode.

A variation on the TX200V was also announced, albeit only in the Japanese market, the TX300V. Although very similar on the surface the TX300V carries two unique features; wi-fi networking to connect with smartphones and other compatible devices and Transferjet compliance. This new technology, which debuted over two years ago but had yet to be included on a camera, allows for charging through a pad as well as transferring images and data. This removes the need for cables and seperate chargers and looks set to eventually replace traditional methods.

Sony has yet to confirm a UK release date and price, but both are expected in the near future. For more information head to Sony’s website.
