Flagship TOUGH model features imaging enhancements

Olympus has today announced the latest addition to its long-standing range of TOUGH compacts, in the shape of the flagship Olympus TG-1. The model features all the hallmarks of a compact built to withstand the rigours of outdoor life, as well as improved imaging performance and other ‘radical new features’, according to Olympus.

As has become customary for Olympus’s headline TOUGH models, the TG-1 features a strong lifeproof specification. The compact is crushproof to a force of 100kg, waterproof to a depth of 12m, shockproof of a drop of 2m and freezeproof down to temperatures of -10c.

Olympus has taken care to improving the imaging side of things with the new TG-1 – the model now features a maximum aperture of f/2 at the wide-angle of the model’s 25 – 100mm focal range, promising improved image in low-light conditions.

Accompanying this lens is Olympus’s TruePic VI image processing system and FAST AF focus system; the very same as that found in the manufacturer’s PEN system cameras.

The Olympus TG-1 also features GPS and e.compass functionality, while a high-contrast and anti-reflective 3in OLED display sits on the rear of the body.

A range of compatible accessories bolsters the extensive out-the-box specification – for example, the model’s lens can be converted to either a fisheye or telephoto converter, while a dedicated underwater housing allows the TG-1 to dive to a depth of 45m. The pair of lens converters are both priced at £129.99, and involve the addition of a converter adapter, which itself is priced at £19.99.

The new Olympus TG-1 is set to hit the shelves in time for the summer holidays, with a predicted on-sale date of mid-June 2012 and RRP of £359.99. For more information on the model, head on over to the Olympus website.
