A definition of Metering

The process by which a camera judges the correct exposure for a scene. On a DSLR this is typically achieved with the aid of a light-sensitive sensor, which measures a subject’s luminance. As this process uses light which travels through the lens, it is also sometimes called through-the-lens (TTL) metering.
