Boasting a whopping 800mm fixed focal length, Nikon's AF-S 800mm f/5.6 VR is likely to cause quite a stir amongst professional sports photographers

Nikon has disclosed information regarding the development of whopping 800mm f/5.6 VR AF-S prime telephoto lens. Made to be compatible with the auto focus system as found on all Nikon FX-format cameras, the lens features Nikon’s VR (Vibration Reduction) system and boasts the longest focal length of any NIKKOR lens ever produced. As can be expected with a lens designed for professional use it offers full dust and water resistance.

No pricing or availability has yet been made available however the price tag is expected to be one of the highest in Nikon’s range.

Thrilled by the new release, Robert Cristina, Manager for Nikon Professional Services, Europe says “We are very excited to showcase a ground-breaking new milestone in NIKKOR development at this summer’s major sporting events”

“It reflects our on-going philosophy to turn ‘feedback into fact’ for the world’s leading news, sports and wildlife photographers,” he added.  

Although an on-sale date and suggested retail price are unavailable at present, Nikon will premiere the lens at the Open Golf Champtionships next week to professional photographers for whom the lens is aimed at. Held between the 19th and 22nd of July, this year’s event is being held at the Royal Lytham & St.Annes golf club in Lancashire.
