Advise please

Hello all,

I'm new to the thread and photography. I just wanted some advise on taking pictures in a public place, as over the weekend I was in my local town taking pictures of the outdoor market, but was told to stop taking pics on move on by a PSCO.

I thought that in a public place I could take photos of what I wanted (within reason, IE military buildings and such).

any links to where to find info on the matter would help.
