Default What general lens for Canon (7D)?

    Hi there,

I've just bought a Canon EOS 7D. Looking for some advice on a good quality lens that will maximise the images the 7D is capable of.

Majority of my pics will be pics of my kids plus landscapes. Any recommendations?

I was considering the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens as I was advised it was quick with good range. Is this considered a good lens?

    Thanks in advance
    Shaun

You didnt say what price range you are looking at.

Im sure the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM would cover most of your needs and set you back around 300
or for the extra range the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS at just over 400
To be honest there is a massive choice it just depends on your budget really.

    Hi,

Sorry, budget is around 400. Did have a look at the EF-S 18-200mm but wondered whether that was too big a lens as my standard everyday lens?

Go for the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM and that should leave you enough change for the 50mm f/1.8 which is a very nice lens for portraiture and low light situations.

Oh - I wouldn't have, if I were you. Optically, it's no better than the 18-55 IS cheapie, maybe worse. The best, albeit pricey, option is the 15-85 IS, IMVHO.
