What general lens for Canon (7D)?
Hi there,
I've just bought a Canon EOS 7D. Looking for some advice on a good quality lens that will maximise the images the 7D is capable of.
Majority of my pics will be pics of my kids plus landscapes. Any recommendations?
I was considering the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens as I was advised it was quick with good range. Is this considered a good lens?
Thanks in advance
Shaun

You didnt say what price range you are looking at.
Im sure the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM would cover most of your needs and set you back around £300
or for the extra range the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS at just over £400
To be honest there is a massive choice it just depends on your budget really.

Hi,
Sorry, budget is around £400. Did have a look at the EF-S 18-200mm but wondered whether that was too big a lens as my standard everyday lens?

Go for the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM and that should leave you enough change for the 50mm f/1.8 which is a very nice lens for portraiture and low light situations.

Thanks Sitan. Sounds a good approach. Off I go lens shopping

Good Luck and dont forget to show us the pikkies you get with your new toys

Just a heads up RGBphoto are doing the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM for 279.99 with free delivery.
If you do use these guys check them out first as Ive never used them myself and make sure they dont sell grey imports either before you buy.

Thanks for the head up Sitan, have now ordered the EF-S 17-85mm lens so a weekend of playing with my new toys is in store!

Oh - I wouldn't have, if I were you. Optically, it's no better than the 18-55 IS cheapie, maybe worse. The best, albeit pricey, option is the 15-85 IS, IMVHO.
