Question Which DSLR for action shots

Hi, I am wanting to buy my first DSLR and specifically want to take action shots of my 2 whippets, aswel as general pics. I have been considering the Canon 500d and Nikon D5000, as I'm attracted by the vari angle screen, not sure if I will use video, but I may after playing about with it! I am considering spending up to 1000 including lens accessories etc. Would I be better dropping some the bells and whistles for a faster camera, if so which one? and which lens would be best suited, typical bundles offer an 18-55mm but should I go for a better lens?
    Thanks Kathy

The Canon 500D and Nikon D5000 are good cameras but not especially fast for action shots.

There's a great deal at the moment on the Sony Alpha 550, which you can buy as a twin lens kit with the 55-200mm telezoom for http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-...enses/p1033191. (This deal may be available elsewhere, I haven't looked).

The Alpha 550 offers a fairly high spec including a 7 frame per second Speed Priority mode (5fps in standard modes) which I think is the highest you'll find at this price point ideal for your action requirements. The 18-55mm kit lens is a bit short for good action shots of your dogs running, so the second, telezoom lens would be very useful.

The main concern about the Sony is that its a bit butch and chunky, which may not be to your tastes. If you'd like something smaller the more petite Pentax K-x is available as a twin lens kit with a 55-300mm lens for just http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-...-lens/p1033550 from the same site, and does a respectable 4.7 fps.

If you want to go to the limit of your 1000 budget they are also selling the semi-pro spec Canon EOS 50D with an 18-200mm IS lens for http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-...s-kit/p1028308 which would give you a formidable 6.3 fps camera. This would be the biggest, heaviest camera of the lot though, but it does at least offer tank-like build quality.

Ignoring the need for speed, probably the best overall DSLR for the monet at the moment is the canon EOS 550D. It only does 3.7 fps but its great in other ways and if the video does interest you it has one of the best HD movie modes on the market. You can buy this as a twin lens kit for http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-...enses/p1519451.

I've only looked at one retail site for these prices and you may well find others deals if you look around. I'd strongly recommend trying them out in your hand first though before buying, as personal preference is very important.

Well if you wanted something smaller, you could look at the sony NEX cameras, I'm pretty sure they do 7fps, and they've got an 18-200 lens, although it'll set you back 99

Thanks Nigel and Rob, 50D is indeed tank-like build quality as I found out yesterday! Hopped off to my local camera shop LCE, to handle a few of them and ask their advice too, I had almost decided on the 50D and definitely wanted to stay with Canon. However I came out of the shop with a huge bulging carrier bag containing the Nikon D90!

The 50D was just too big and heavy and although I'm sure would have given me what I wanted, it was just too bulky and heavy so wouldn't have been easy to carry around for long. The D90 however fits comfortably in my hand, comes with a 18-105 lens plus I bought a 70-300mm too, plus the bag, the memory card and the UV filters so I did go over my 1000 budget...........!

Now I just have to wade through the huge instruction manual, will probably be back for advice from other D90 users though
