The winning shots were selected from a range of categories, including animals, architecture, landscape, lifestyle and travel and several others.

Holly Wesley took home first prize with a daylit portrait of a horse. Brolin Roney came second with an image taken at a Holi festival of Colour, and Bob Weil took third place with an image of a woman walking through a fierce snowstorm. Each receives a prize of a 16GB iPad Mini.

The competition’s rules state that entered images must be captured on an iPhone or iTouch device. Although desktop post-processing software is forbidden, iPhone-friendly apps such as Instagram and Hipstamatic may be used.

It’s hardly surprising that such great imagery has been captured on iPhones – the iPhone 5 in particular is renowned for its excellent camera. Nigel Atherton recently crowned it the best smartphone camera of 2013 in our roundup.

We’d recommend having a look at the gallery of winning images on the official website, there’s some truly fantastic photography to see. Entries for next year’s iPhone Photography Awards close on March 31, 2014.
