feral youths problems
      #682016 - 23/07/2008 09:13

Following a couple of incidents, I have become increasingly uneasy taking sunset / late night shots alone and carrying expensive kit with the current trend of knife wielding drunk & drugged feral youths running amok and would welcome the company of any local fellow photography enthusiasts or a "buddy" on my jaunts.

I am based in Chelmsford Essex and regularly visit the surrounding areas of Maldon, Heybridge etc.

Many thanks
Mike

If it is that bad I'd move to somewhere a bit more peaceful, or carry a Maxim machine gun !

Have you informed the police of your fears and the incidents you allege have already occurred?

My experience with gangs of feral youths is probably a lot less than yours, but the groups I've encountered have been sufficiently large that having two people to target would probably just double their fun ... the odd ancient weirdo struggling under the weight of a sackful of photo kit is likely to get left alone on the principle of not being a sufficiently worthy target; with only one head available, a queue needs to form in order for them all to get their boots in, and they're not organised enough to form a nice orderly queue.

I had an issue once with hooded kids springing out from behind cars trying to steal my kit, but there were passersby. I have an alsation too but all he did was wag at the fun of this new game.

I think the very large gangs are fairly rare, but groups of 3-4 antisocial kids aren't uncommon. Anyway, sometimes just having one person keeping an eye out for potential trouble while the other is shooting is enough.

I think the idea of photo buddies is a good one.

Another reason why you should invest in a good, solid, heavy duty tirpod!
