Hi, anyone know of any way to quieten the shutter noise of a Nikon D3 (or any other SLR for that matter)?
Someone recently mentioned a gizmo used by photographers on film sets, but couldn't offer any more info on the matter. Does this exist? If so what is it? How does it work? and where do I get one?

The D3 ain't that noisy! Not compared to my old Canon 20D at least.
As for a thing to quieten it... no idea! Perhaps wrap a pillow around it? Bit difficult in the field though

This what you are looking for? They're called "camera blimps"

Any SLR is intrinsically noisy with all that mechanism clattering about at near cine speeds. If noise matters then one should consider the merits of a Leica rangefinder.

Leica quiet, Rolleiflex quieter still. Oh, and both have better glass than any Nikon.

You wouldn't want an F3 with added motordrive then..

Yes. A between lens shutter.

No. Nikon is better and less expensive than either of those (and for what it's worth Canon).

If your shutter noise bothers people sing loudly and ask which they'd prefer to hear, the shutter or your singing.

Further info can be found here. Unfortunately it looks like I've come across this thread too late to get one before I head to Edinburgh.
If the above isn't enough to muffle your shutter noise then what you need is one of these.

Less expensive perhaps but wishful thinking otherwise I'm afraid. Leica and Zeiss glass is pretty well acknowledged as the dogs cojones in any debate.

It's often (usually?) difficult to sort out the truth when users are extolling the merits of different marques, but FWIW I came across a small piece of presumably independent data on this matter the other day. It's from an FAQ on the website of a US reprographics bureau, well-known in particular amongst LF snappers over there (although the quote is about 35mm scanning):
Quote:
At 5000 dpi, we've reached the point of diminishing returns...you have to scan much larger to pull even small amounts of additional detail from the film. The exceptions are images captured with X-pan cameras, Zeiss lenses and Leica lenses.
Peter will appreciate the inclusion of the X-pan there as well, no doubt. :-)

Only if you've got an optical lab to prove it. In practice what's the differebnce apart from the price. Anyway are't Zeiss now made by Cosina. Not that that is a criticism; Cosina have come on a bit in manufacturing traditional designs to high standards.

Clearly you've never shot with Zeiss or Leica lenses. Or Canon, for that matter; otherwise yourt original statement could not have been made. In the Nikon v Canon world, some lenses from one manufacturer are better, some worse; some lenses cheaper, some dearer - and on occasion, the cheaper ones are better. But there's precious little in it. Now your original (and rather preposterous) allegation was that Nikon lenses were better than Zeiss or Leica. Where's your evidence to support that? Yes, they're cheaper, but better? Nikon lenses are of very decent quality at a reasonable (for the quality) price, but surely only the most blinkered of fanboys would deny that Leica and Zeiss lenses are better ultimately, and I have never heard before the serious suggestion that Nikon lenses might be better from a respectable source - unless we're going back to the 60s issue of high/low contrast optics for rangefinders, that is, and there the issue is more than a little debatable.

No, he's right there - Cosina are making the Zeiss Ikon, its lenses, and the new SLR lenses.

- not that that will stop them being any good, of course! :-) (Just as being made by Kyocera didn't stop the Contax G2 Zeiss lenses from being first class!)
I believe two of the Ikon lenses are being made by Zeiss themselves in Germany, though, just FTR.

I'd forgotten about the Ikon.........
Must've missed the bit about the SLR lenses being farmed out to Cosina though...
Funny bunch Cosina - quite clearly capable of exceptional quality yet they seem to be mainly a sub-contractor to other brands. The only lens I have that I'm aware is one of theirs is a Vivitar branded 19mm which performs remarkably well considering how ludicrously cheap it was...

Certainly as a company they've done all sorts. Camera and lens manufacture for Zeiss, Rollei, the Voigtlander brand, Canon, Nikon and Olympus to my certain knowledge, some of them top-end, others bargain basement; some excellent indie lenses, others built to the lowest possible budget. I've owned a fair bit of their stuff - Voigtlander Bessas L, T, R and R2, with 15, 25, 35, 50 and 90mm lenses; a Vivitar 100mm f3.5 Macro; a Miranda K-mount SLR; and Cosina CSM, CSL and CSR SLRs. The Voigtlander lenses are all excellent, the cameras vary from quite awful (Bessa L) to wonderful (Bessa R2). The Vivitar macro was capable of very decent results and was remarkably cheap. The Miranda was probably the nastiest SLR I've ever used, although the lens wasn't bad, and the CSM/L/R are late M42 mount cameras that vary from the pedestrian CSM to the really quite interesting CSR, with a choice of spot or centre-weighted metering and the ability to accept a separate adaptor to give aperture priority. These three are pretty well-made and nice cameras.
