Hello, Could someone enlighten me how a dust off ref photo works. Is it:
A photo free of dust which is compared to the image being 'cleaned' i.e: any dust on the image is removed because its NOT on the reference photo
or
A photo taken WITH dust so that when compared to the image being 'cleaned' it realises theres a spot (dust) in the same place on both and therefore removes that spot from the image.
Thanks

I think you need Capture NX to make use of the Dust Off Ref Photo.

Have Capture NX - it came bundled with camera on a 30 day trial.
I have no software yet, is Capture NX worth getting? It seems a tad expensive.
Or should I go for Adobe Elements, does it have a similar "dust off" feature?
Thanks

Is NX woth getting? Use the trial and see if YOU think it is!
Elements has a way of removing dust bunnies - the clone tool! Can be time consuming but is only very necessary on some shots (large expanses of blue sky show them up, especially when small apertures have been used).

Ok Nod thanks. Just didn't want to learn NX only to find it wasn't as good as say elements. Wanted other opinions regarding the software to consider.
I may get elements as it seems reasonably priced and fairly widely used as far as I can see and learn that.

In a nutshell, if you want ultimate control over almost every aspect of Raw (NEF) conversion, NX is the software for you. If you want to make gentle tweaks to images then Elements will do that just fine. Not sure if Elements now has a Raw converter built in.

Elements does do basic RAW conversion but you may need an add-on for your specific camera (eg I have Elements 3 which will process the NEFs from my D70s but not my D200).
