SB600 basic use
      #678568 - 14/07/2008 14:34

As a newbie, I would appreciate any expert advice on basic procedures to get going with the SB600. I cannot understand why when attached to D80 with hot shoe, it sometimes enables built in flash and other times doesn't, and why when SB600 attached but switched off, built in flash will not operate normally.

The manual is baffling, and not all that helpful.

Any (general) comments appreciated.

Thanks!

I just tried my sb-800 on my D40 and the onboard flash will never go up, as the camera can detect that the flash is there (Even if I push the flash button)

Maybe you have a faulty contact or something?

What modes do you have selected on the mode dial? Some modes inhibit the flash, both built-in and external. Have you reset the SB600? Some of the alterations are retained in its memory when it is switched off and detached.

If the SB600 is attached but switched off, the on-board flash won't work properly because the body of the SB600 stops the flash from springing all the way up, and so directs the flash downwards instead of forwards.

As for sometimes not firing, I've not experienced this.
