Firmware
      #678202 - 12/07/2008 22:54

sorry another really dumbo question I'm sure!

If you buy a camera and later there is a firmware update, how do you get the update on your camera?

For Canon it's download and unzip the file and put on a blank CF card. The Camera should have an update firmware option. Select this option, the camera then updates.

My ipod does it via iTunes, so it's entirely possible that some camera manufacturers may do it via the route.

At a guess I'd say Nikon does it the first way, but I'm happy to find out i'm wrong!

There are usually good instructions on how to apply the firmware upgrade on the download site. Just make sure you do the firmware upgrade with a fully charged battery. Sometimes they recommend that you only do the upgrade using the AC adapter supplied with the camera, but to my mind a fully charged battery must be a better reliable source than an AC adapter.

Old D70 firmware instructions:
The basic steps to update the firmware are:
1. Download and expand the firmware files
2. Format an approved CF card in the camera (do not use a Microdrive card to perform this update)
3. Connect Camera to computer (in MSC USB mode) or use a CF Card Reader (do not use a Lexar Jump Shot USB cable to perform this update)
4. Copy to the top level of the card the downloaded "A firmware" file
5. Disconnect camera from computer
6. Update the firmware from the "Setup" menu
7. Follow the camera's on-screen menus
8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 using the "B Firmware"
9. Re-format Card

Nikon may have simplified the process a bit since then.
I used two cards for my update....one "A" card...one "B" card....worked fine.

None of my recent cameras will allow me to do it unless the battery is fully charged. I do it the CF card way and just follow the instructions which are always given. It's actually very simple and would have to be for me to be able to do it.

For Nikon any firmware update is available on their site but you need to register to login and supply the cameras serial number...
They list any & all updates and the full installation instructions for each model..
