Popping over to Warwick on Monday (14th), Charlecote Park (National Trust) and Warwick Castle. Anyone have any knowledge of these locations or maybe suggestions for others nearby? Thanks, Harry

The Lord Leycester Hospital and chapel (Warwick High Street) is definitely worth a visit, as is the centre of Warwick. If you're into canals and locks, there's a staircase just north of Warwick. A bit further afield there's Kenilworth Castle.

Charlecote's nice, although I've yet to get any really exciting pics there. Warwick Castle, however, is a favourite photographic stamping ground of mine - plenty of good locations. However, if you're going round the castle, and spending a bit of time in the town, and going to Charlecote, you won't have an awful lot of time for much else in a day - my local castle (Kenilworth) is the biggest ruined castle in England, and one of the best, too - and another favourite subject of mine.
The canal locks Malcolm mentioned are at Hatton - if you take the A4177 from Warwick towards Solihull it's on your left a couple of miles past the A46 flyover - if you reach The Waterman, you've gone too far, but you can park there and walk down to them - and have a pint.
Other possibilities include Baddesley Clinton, a moated manor house, and Packwood House (both NT, and very close to each other further on from Hatton). Or there's Coventry - the Cathedrals are well worth a look, and it's only a few miles from Warwick. Or in the other direction, Charlecote is very close to Stratford. The problem is really deciding what not to see in a day.
Reckon I should set up a Forum Day Out in Warwick sometime...

Thanks very much for the tips and advice there.
I'm not going to get a full day as I've an appointment in Bromsgrove in the morning so I wont get over to Warwick until mid-morning. Also, its my first real outing just to relax and take some shots so I dont want to rush around fitting stuff in and would prefer to miss the town centre.
I found the locks Malcolm mentioned on Google maps at Hatton. So, considering the above advice, I am going to go to the castle then take in the canal locks a little later.
Theres some good places there Nick, I've been to a lot of them and other NT places around the country with my job (engineer) but am starting to look at them differently since taking up photography.
Just keeping my fingers crossed for the bloomin weather.
Certainly count me in for a Warwick day, i'd like that.
Thanks all, Harry

My photography was limited to drunken record shots with a P&S during my Coventry days. With hindsight I would have liked to have recorded the last weeks of the Rolls Royce factory there.

Nuneaton only 10 minutes from Warwick Castle? Ah, must be byRyanAir.
Burton Dassett hills are great - Warwickshire's least lowest point, and the only bit that actually feels upland. Also, there's Chesterton Mill, well worth a quick detour from the M40.

Word of warning with Warwickshire. Watch out for the speed camera vans!
A Warwick meet sounds good btw, it's only down the road from me but I've not really visited it (other than working for Warwickshire Police for 3 months, but then I only visited the Police Stations!).

Well, had a good time yesterday. Weather was not the best, very bright and cloudy so some exposures were tricky.
Was a little taken a back at the cost of Warwick Castle ~ £3 parking + £18 entrance!! The Hawk / falconry display was great though.
Went to locks at Hatton after, again weather made it a little grey and flat but a nice place. There was a guy there with a D300 & tripod, anyone here?
Took some pics - they are in the Appraisal gallery ~ "A Bird of Prey + A Water Wheel + A View"

We should have warned you about the steep entrance fee at the Castle - but they do permit photography IN the castle, unlike at National Trust properties. Daily newspapers sometimes do special offers which can defray the entrance fee. My party benefited from one last summer.

Tesco Clubcard Deals are a good way round it - you effectively pay 25% of the entrance fee - and some companies have deals that amount to the same thing for their employees. We have an annual pass which is well worth while for the frequency with which we go.

[skinflint mode] How many of you were there? £18 entrance sounds about right for 6 people. I think twice about any place that charges more than £5 for entrance and charges for parking in addition. As for an RHS place that wanted an extra £5 to take a camera in because I had a monopod I told them to stuff it and went elsewhere. [/skinflint off]

I know Mike its a lot of money for one person but by the time I got to the entrance and paid £3 parking I paid the price and entered, only just though. Like you, I almost turned and gave it a miss.
Had to pay with my card because I didn't have enough cash!

Despite the high entrance fee, Warwick Castle does seem to attract lots of visitors and there's plenty to see. On my visit last summer, I can't recall leaving it feeling that I'd overpaid on account of non-working displays, restricted access etc. which I've too frequently found at other venues. Nearby Kenilworth Castle is less costly but I think cameras are now banned from the refurbished gate-house. I was lucky. We went on a (semi-) private visit before the restrictions kicked in.
