I have recently purchased a 105mm micro Nikkor lens, since it arrived I have hardly taken it off my D80, it's great. Anyway I now fancy a ring flash for close up and macro, can anyone give me any advice as to the effectiveness and range of these, the price of the sigma version looks good to me.

Take a look at the Nikon R1C1 outfit, whilst it's not a ring flash when used with the supplied extreme close up adaptor it performs as one. You have the added benefit that the SB R200 flash units can be used wirelessly as fill in flashes if you have other speedlights and the accessories supplied with the kit are quite extensive. If your D80's own flash can be used as a commander (I believe it can) then you can get the R1 kit (which is the same but without the SU800 commander unit) for just a few quid more than the Sigma ring flash. Highly recommended!
Hope this helps, Andrew
PS. I also have a ring flash but it's very seldom used now.

I agree the SB-R1/SBR1C1 is the way to go, but if it's too expensive, try a secondhand SB-29s; manual exposure only and a bit clunky with the controller/flash head cable but it does the job. The "s" is important because the output can be set to a lower level, important on close up work.

You could try one of these: Marumi ring flash My daughter uses one on her D70/100mm macro setup and the results are pretty good for a budget unit.

I like the look of the SBR1 kit and yes the D80 will operate the SB200 flash units in up to two separate groups. I think the Sigma unit has a similar effect with other Sigma flash units. the price of the Nikon SBR1 is my only concern. Thanks for all the help.
