Do we therefore take it that two thirds don't, or do we just assume ignorance and/or the usual can't-be-bothereditis on behalf of the majority?
Where can we find out if our MP needs his or her arm twisting?

I love the bit about local police being able to make local decisions, according to the Home Office Minister. The Police are as much bound by the law as the public. In other words they can't make arbitrary decisions or interpret the law for their own ends. Only Parliament can make laws and only courts can interpret the laws. You can be done for obstruction in some circumstances, but refusing to stop taking pictures when ordered to do so by a police officer would eventually land the officer in more trouble than the person taking the pictures if the matter went to court.
Sadly the Home office minister does not seem to understand the principles on which law in the UK works. The command of a police officer is not the word of god or the law, he is simply there to enforce the existing laws.
In other words the Home Office Minister needs pulling down a peg or two.

Er, try reading what he said. He most categorically didn't say anything like what you're accusing him of, as we debated at the time. At no point is he saying that the police can "make arbitrary decisions or interpret the law for their own ends" - he's simply pointing out the fact that in some cases, local decisions mean that photography isn't allowed, which is absolutely true - he's talking about schools, for example, banning photography, which they are perfectly at liberty to do (however daft those bans might be!). Yes, he's not worded it very well, but to interpret it as you have simply isn't justified by his words.

We all I can say if that he didn't make it very clear -
'There is no general restriction on photography in public places, and there is no presumption of privacy for individuals in a public place. However, decisions may be made locally to restrict photography, for example, to protect children, or at organised events.'
Schools are private property and any event organized on private property would be covered. Well that goes without saying - He should say what he means in plain english then is all I can say, because an organised event in the street would not be enforeable. Talk about going around the houses, typical politician.

Quite. I suspect he only said what he did to cover his backside, but he made a pig's ear of it. As you say, typical politician...

Pleased to see that my local MP has signed up - I usually regard him as a bit of a donkey, but at least he got this right

I would agree with this point. 2/3rd's are either not supportive of public photography, couldn't care less or have not taken any public opinion one way or another.
My MP is on the list which is good but that means the majority are not presently behind Mitchell.

I'll get round to posting my MPs response, but the brief version is that he hasn't heard of the problem and isn't prepared to undermine the police by signing this EDM. I had thought that he was a good constituency MP, but it appears not.

My response would be that for him not to have heard of the issue shows a remarkable lack of awareness seeing as it has been well publicised. Even so, a small amount of research on his part (or whichever member of his family is in his pay) would allow him to make an informed opinion rather than merely not supporting an EDM on the basis of ignorance. I might also add that the letter was being copied to the local press, selected national press and media, the party leader, the party chairman, and also the leaders and chairmen of the other two major parties.

That's pretty much what I had thought to do. Clearly he thinks it's some lefty conspiracy, which must be why it's been signed by such noted left-wing radicals as Michael Ancram, Ann Widdecombe, Nicholas Soames.......

Make an appointment to see him at his surgery. I'd write him a good letter first, pointing out that he hadn't responded to your emails. If he still doesnt respond Id make an appointment to speak to him. Thats (supposed to be) what he's paid for...
