"Affordable full-frame" - just who do Nikon think they are kidding? How many photo enthusiasts have £2000 to spend on a camera body?
Looks like a great product but sadly, like the D300, remains well out of my financial reach :-(

Its not just the camera cost, as existing non FX format owners would have to change their lens collection as well to get the most out of it.

But on the other side it would bring down the price on the D300....(as if!)

D300 price will have to halve before I can even consider atempting to save for it :-(
.....and no news of a D80 replacement yet, either.
SB900 - RRP is given as more than the cost of many new dSLR's ! Flashgun prices are ridiculously high for what they are

Who do they think they are, they must think folks have money flowing out of their pockets.. Affordable?? They're having a laugh aren't they? And there's talk of us heading towards a recession... I don't know..

It's quite obviously a relatvie term. What constitutes 'affordable' is down to the object as much as the subject. £2000 for a full frame DSLR? That's affordable for many many enthusiasts. It's out of my price range at the moment, but I'd still say that it's affordable for what it is.

I wonder if Canon still think that there's nothing in the market place to compete with the 5D. I'd be very interested to see how these two stack up against each other.

Great news that D3-like performance is now available in a lower cost camera and the new flash looks interesting; the SB-800 LCD display is rather poor so I'll be interested to see how the new one is.

Personally, I was hoping we'd see the D3x today, but it looks like we'll have to wait.

What's clear though is that FX will continue to fill the market from the top. It makes sense not to buy any more DX lenses if you think FX features in your future.

This looks like a good camera.

The price may be more affordable once they hit the shops. I was amazed at the quoted price for the Canon 1000D but people seem to be expecting the street price to be much lower so lets hope that the same is true for this Nikon.

So, is there an adapter so that it'll take my Canon lenses.

Just out of interest, what was the RRP (or equivalent) of the D100 when it first hit the shelves?

The 5D is two years older technology, so if the D700 isn't "better" then Nikon havn't been doing their jobs properly.
The 5D is still a fantastic camera, but technology does move on. When the 5D came out it was £2400 body only, now it's nearer £1200, so time will reduce the asking price, but it's still pitched at D3 owners, not D300 upgraders.

I noticed in Nikon's "cashback" ad in the Times today only the D40 & D60 featured, the D80 was conspicuous by its absence. I conclude that the D90 will soon be announced!

Another thought...

Nice to see that it's "only" 12mp or so. I'd imagine that the low light / high ISO performance will be good and I'd rather have that than a high mp count and less good high ISO performance.

why in the pictures does it look like it has a DX lens attatched (18-200)

Surely the 24-70 would be a more appropriate partner.

Just out of interest, what's the RRP of a Canon EOS 5D body now? OK, I know the street price of the kit with the excellent 24-105mm f/4L IS lens is less, I'm just trying to make the point that RRP means sweet FA.

Maybe they're just stressing the point that it's DX compatible.

I think I paid around £1800 for mine, but the price had come down a little by then.

The 'kit' lens will be a AFS VR 24-120mm ED f3.5-5.6 G (IF) - in Japan at least, but I expect it'll be the same over here.

Personally I'd just get the 20mm, 35mm, 50mm and 105mm Micro primes - looks like a very nice package.

It looks as though it shares the same Grip as the D300 which would be good. For the price of a D3 you can get D300 12Mp DX Sensor + D700 12Mp FX sensor + Grip for fast frme rates seems like a deal to me 2 bodies for the price of one.

If the D700 matches the D3 at ISO 800-6400 for colour, latitude and lack of grain, I'll be buying one instead of a second D3!!! Although you can now already get the D3 for £2600...
