A new owner of Nikon 70-300mm VR....
      #672108 - 28/06/2008 20:04

...could anyone give me a guide on?

Am taking it to the Air Show at RAF Waddington this coming weekend, and I would appreciate if anyone would shed a light on as which switches I need to use on my recent purchase Nikon 70-300 AF-S VR Lenses.

(My 40th Birthday treat to myself!)

So which I should be using the "normal" or "active" when I attempt to span the taking off/landing of any aircraft?

Hmmm....Quite fancy this lens myself!

I assume it will be the same as the 18-200/VR lens that I use. Use the "Normal" setting.

The "Active" setting is only for when you are taking pictures from a moving vehicle (which I assume will not be the case?)

Set "M/A" switch to "A" for Autofocus mode

Great Lens, use it with my D300 and the 1.5 multiplie makes it fantastic for wildlife as it is small and light enough to handhold and the VR makes that work. Set the D300 to a highish ISO 400/800 and you get speed, perfomance and very little noise.

Are you going to be panning as the plane goes past? If so, you'll need the active setting.

Sorry but that's wrong. Active mode is for use when taking pictures FROM a moving vehicle.

From the lens's manual...

Setting the vibration reduction mode switch

NORMAL: The vibration reduction mechanism primarily reduces
camera shake, making smooth panning shots
possible.

ACTIVE: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces camera
shake when taking pictures and those from a moving
vehicle. In this mode, the lens does not automatically
distinguish panning from camera shake.

and...

• When taking panning shots, be sure to set the vibration reduction mode switch to
[NORMAL]. If you move the camera in a wide arc when panning, vibration in the
direction of that movement is not affected. For example, if you pan the camera
horizontally, only vibration in the vertical direction is reduced, making smooth pans
much easier.

Thanks to everyone and I am pleased to say that the Nikon 70-300mm work nicely with the setting at Normal.

It does bring me pleasure to see my photographs...

Will post it soon.

Thanks once again.
