Is this an unnecessary piece of software that is cluttering up my hard drive? All it appears to do is convert Fuji RAW to JPEGS; PS Elements 5 seems to do much more, Hyper just seems to offer a conversion with no opportunity to adjust anything much. The instructions with it are so dire that I cannot see anything that suggests it can adjust brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows etc. Anyone know differently?

No not at all. It offers a good number of adjustment tools. You do get more tools activated if you have a SuperCCD SR equipped camera. Some reviewers say that Photoshop does a better job at using the SuperCCD SR dynamic range and all that, but I prefer the colour results you get. Photoshop does seem to give you a slight advantage in resolution for some reason, but I think the results tend to be grainier than with HyperUtility. I have HS-V3 (but not currently on my system as I can't find the CDs since I recovered my system) and I love putting my S20pro and S3 RAFs through it. The colour is great and its easier to get the results out of the film simulations too. It take a bit more twidling with Photoshop than with HS-V2/3. Keep it, in fact compare the results between the two and you will see.
