I took a Kiev 4m rangefinder out late this afternoon and finished off a b&w film. What a pleasure it was. I enjoy digital photography, but back to basics with the Kiev today just seemed so simple, refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable. I took my modern Sekonic lightmeter, but in all honesty I found the selenium cell meter on the Kiev to be pretty well spot on in every comparison.
Armed with the 35mm, 53mm and 135mm lenses, yellow filter, and the universal 'turret' finder, I experienced great satisfaction in setting up for each shot I planned. And there's a point; I did actually plan each shot, finding myself thinking through what I wanted to achieve and setting up accordingly.
I love the universal viewfinder, especially the way you can see what's coming into the frame before it gets there. This enables an immediate response once the subject is in the right position as you know they are going to be there just before it happens. Even using my digital SLR is more of a hit & miss affair on this point than with the Kiev.
Of course, I've yet to see the results, but I have that warm feeling of anticipation and I have really enjoyed the whole experience today. If you are using digital now, I recommend giving your camera a holiday and taking out a classic for a change.
Finally, as for the Kiev 4m, I'm aware of their reputation but this one performed flawlessly and I can't wait for my next shoot.

Interesting post. Good luck with the results.
I think it was a Kiev which I first picked up at the market stall a few weeks ago, found it was stuck, and was then offered the Zorki 4K.
