URL link in signatures
      #669436 - 21/06/2008 14:53

I assume that the reason the link to my URL has been removed from my signature is that I haven't put a backlink on that page.

To be honest, I'm not that bothered and it is unlikely to affect my participation here but I think the unusual step of demanding a backlink for the "privilege" is wrong. Its unusual on any forum, but here I (like I suspect many others) are long term subscribers to the magazine and therefore pay towards this site.

This an excellent set of forums and I was very happy to provide a link to the AP site - but in any case, why is it such a big deal?

I agree that it is a good forum and it isn't a big deal, but it is a small deal. And one - because I think it cuts across the ethos of the Internet - is worth mentioning. And, because of the magazine subscription collection aspect, there is an bad taste left.

I put links on my website because I want them to be there - my choice - and I try to make my site interesting enough so that others link to me, and they do. That's the way it works. Well actually that's not true. I also "sell" links to people who donate to my justgiving.com charity page, but who said I had to be consistent?

I disagree. I completely understand why the reciprocal link requirement is there. Every time you post and you have a link to your website under your post, search engines pick that up as a link to your site thus increasing your site's chance of being picked up by search engines in the future. So in the spirit of the internet, i.e. reciprocal linking, the request to have a link back to AP is perfectly reasonable in my mind.

I agree completely with your summation of the situation, but not the conclusion. On a Forum participation and community is the key, and if you participate your website is part of your identity.

Not that my knowledge is exhaustive, but I can't think of any other fora where this particular idea is applied.

Have to admit even though I have always had a link back on my site (even before it was stated as a must) my feeling were the same as yours.
But end of the day IPC are in business to make money, so the more people that visit here and click on the the flashy ads the better it is for them not mention going out and buying the mags or subscribing, being cynical

I'm building a site at the minute and will be putting a link up as a reciprocal thing as I'll be putting my web addy in my sig. I do it on other forums as I think it's only fair.

Looks like your Avatar is still being built.

You get lots of traffic from the AP site.
