New Zealand nature photos
      #669342 - 21/06/2008 07:23

Hi fellow snappers.
I'm an amateur nature photographer living on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island.
I get well off the beaten track into the forest and photograph unusual species of fungi, orchids and so on,using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8,a great little compact.
If you'd like to see what I've been shooting, please check out my website http://www.freewebs.com/nzwild/
Look forward to viewing some of your sites too.
Cheers
Steve (Lord Potty Esquire)

Steve,

You have some really great shots there. I was in New Zealand a few years ago and I have to say that I was amazed by how beautiful the west coast of the south island was....stunning coastline...fantastic woods....

I'd love to go back there some day.

Thanks for your feedback Steve.
If you ever make it back over here I'd be happy to show you around some of the best spots.
Did you get to spend much time around Punakaiki where the Pancake Rocks are? Thats an awesome area!

Sadly didn't spend enough time there... only passed through quite quickly. Did the tourist thing at the pancake rocks of course! haha.

I really loved the south island as a whole... Lake Wanaka, Lake Te Anau. Seems like so long ago now...

Also spent a lot of time dossing on the east coast... Christchurch, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura etc...

The Pancake Rocks are great but can be a bit disappointing if the tide isn't right to see the blowholes going off.
I lived at the mouth of the Punakaiki River for 2 years and used to kayak through the caves under the rocks at low tide.
Lots of Hectors dolphins to play with too.
Christchurch was home for about 14 years too. I went there in 81 mainly for the music scene, and because it reminded me of 'home' (England). I was a punk/skin in those days and Chch had a huge punk scene in the early 80's.

Some great photographs there Steve.
I was over the south island last year, magnificent place. As people say, it reminds them of Wales :P
Is the north island worth a trip to?

Yes,there are parts of the North Island that are very nice.
Some of my favourite places are the beech forests of the Urewera National Park, near Rotorua.Theres a little lake called Waikareiti and a hut on the far side, from which a track goes up to the highest point in the park.Theres an awesome 'Goblin' cloud forest up there with huge gnarly trees covered in long beards of moss, like something from Middle Earth.
The volcanic plateau in the centre of the island has many interesting thermal areas, notably at Rotorua and around Taupo,& there are some great mountains there where you can ski in the season.
Mt Taranaki,or Egmont on the West Coast is beautiful, and then theres the Bay Of Islands in Northland, and of course the Coromandel Peninsula.
I think my favourite parts of New Zealand, though, have to be on the West Coast of the South Island, from Golden Bay in the north, right down to Fijordland in the south.
I find the North Island a bit crowded and too 'cultivated'.
I do like my forest
Cheers
Steve
