its funny how most local papers require formal photography training to take you on as a news photographer, whereas regional news agencies don't care; as long as you can deliver they will hire you. At 2k a year this course seems like a good money spinner for PA or Grimbsy uni, or whoever the money is going to, whereas the budding photographer would probably be better off doing the NCTJ course in photojournalism, costing just over 1k and lasting only one year, and they would be guaranteed a job afterwards on a local paper

I just wish someone would dig a big hole and drop into it the person who started the term "Foundation Degree". In the olden days before everything was devalued one did a foundation course and then went on to do the degree course. What next, a foundation doctorate?

Do you mean in the days when a college attracted students on the strength of its reputation, rather than the ability of its marketing department?

No. Rocket scientists and even lowly physicists like me need degrees. I would think that press photography needs, on the technical side skill and craft, and on the personal side, attributes and abilities that I could only imagine. Degrees on he other hand should be about intellect and learning to learn. Each to their own. I collect degrees (B. Sc., BA (the latter a wonderfully eclectic mix of courses from Open) and an MSc in computer science). I would make a lousy press photographer and most press photographers, and even more so their reporter colleagues would make lousy scientists.

Degrees are fine but if we start devaluing them with things like foundation degrees we're on a slippery slope. The Chinese government is already complaining about the quality of some UK degrees.
