And I was hoping that at long last, the manufacturers were going to produce digital cameras with upgradable Sensors and electronics. Many cameras use the same body on successive models, with just the 'Guts' changed inside, so why not? (It's been done for decades on PCs!)

There are concerns raised about fuel for vehicles, but I would have thought the amount of petroleum used on plastics, textiles etc. must be much higher, so we may have problems with those before vehicle fuel.

It's also been done on DSLRs. it was a resounding flop.

Well yes, Kodak and Leica have 'offered' this option on their DSLRs and both manufacturers should be commended for taking this issue on board. However, if one of the big manufacturers decided to 'seriously' go down this route, it would mean they would have to apply fundamentally different marketing and product support strategy model to the one they currently use, and their Importers/Distributors would need to be 'tooled up' and their service department staff would need training. It would undoubtedly be a 'Return to Importer' job, and I suspect many potential buyers would be put off by this, unless a really efficient and fast service was provided.

At the manufacturing level, their electronics assembly plants would eventually need to be expanded and their body moulding and assembly plants might well reduce in size. One would not have the continual changing of models, which would also impact on retailers, who would be dealing more with returning cameras for upgrades. Maybe some retailers would set up their own upgrading facilities and compete against each other on the pricing, speed and quality of the service they provide. As you can see, the retailing model currently being used, would see some very big changes!
