CS2 for idiots.
      #662836 - 04/06/2008 22:37

I freely confess I am not really computerate but I know enough to get myself in real trouble from time to time. I have CS2 and I can kind of use it but some help might be a good idea. I looked on eBay and there are various packages for sale ranging from £5 to £25 that claim to educate you about CS2. They seem to be DVD's or books.

Does anyone have any recommendations about which book or package would help me?

The problem with this book is its written by a pro for pro's. It is a very good book don't get me wrong but sometimes I think what. So some effort is needed also is it possible to get the cs2 version still. I paid the full price for mine cs3 game out soon after and I found the cs2 version at almost half price. So be prepared to work at it or maybe I'm just thick

You could try the Photshop CS book for digital photographers by Scott Kelby It does not delve to deeply or technicaly into it but does show you some of the essential things you may want to do in a easy to understand way if you can put up with his American sense of humour .

The Martin Evening books are so comprehensive and so clearly written, I would recommend them to anyone. They explain everything clearly and the book will still be informative as you grow into the program. Why buy a book that limits your knowledge growth, you will only want to dump it for something better anyway.

By the late Bruce Fraser. Yes they are a good compliment to MF's books too.

Phil Andrew's books are brill - and not just because he's a mate but because he's a teacher so he has actually stood in a room while someone learnt from his methods - not many geeks can say that so they just type away thinking they are making perfect sense.

Which usually they are not.

I personally hate the Dummies and Idiots books - written in confusing sound bites with no sense of narrative. Martin Evening's books are a good read as he does have a narrative style that is easier to follow than the superficially easy to read Dummies/Idiots books - Martin's books are surprisingly accessible for books that can take you a long way.

I can recommend Phil's CS A-Z books - sit at the computer and play and then when you come up against a problem they are good quick reference books to get you over it. That way it is a mix of experience and knowledge rather than trying to plough through a huge tome.

Having said all that not everyone can learn from books and 1 to 1 or an evening class, or one of our courses (see there had to be an ad somewhere) is a better option.

I finally have my Martin Evening book and it is a hefty volume - 600 plus pages! A quick skim would suggest that it is the one book I will need and I can avoid all the CS2 for Idiots stuff so it could have been a good investment!

CS2 and CS3 is undoubtedly the way forward and I combine my CS2 with Capture LE1. I gather that this can be upgraded to LE4 but some folk claim it is noisy and they stick with LE1. I just wish the prices charged by Adobe for their stuff were not so mind bendingly expensive. I am not surprised that there are lots of rip-off copies circulating. I see that someone paid £100 for CS2 from eBay and it looked completely OK but it was a copy and Adobe rejected it. The flaw was that some words didn't have spaces between them! Maybe printed in China. They will produce anything that will sell even with the original hall marks on Georgian silver. Ah well! That's life in this modern computer age.

My thanks to everyone for their help and advice. I had never heard of Martin Evening and this is the power of the Web - being able to tune in to people who are experts on the thing that you want.

Fen - what is the WDC magazine? I am always staggered by the number of magazines in Smiths - not to mention the price! I really must get around to reading some of this stuff. My problem is that psychology occupies nearly all my time.

I have the camera - a 30D - and I have the lenses including the 70-200 f4 L but I am not taking photos. The garden and the pond are marvellous at this time despite our chilly summer and we had a couple of herons recently. Perishers! If only I could get the photograph that shows how beautiful nature is. I have tried but never succeeded. Van Gogh had the same problem so I am not alone. How does one encapsulate the beauty of an English garden? Self seeded foxgloves and Forget me Knots and Equisetum. I must try harder. When Michelangelo was painting the Creation on the Sistine Chapel ceiling his first mix of plaster was too wet and grew mould and he had to remove it all and start again. There is a lesson there.
