Newb G9 question
      #662073 - 02/06/2008 22:26

Hi Ive recently bought a G9 as an upgrade for our old digital camera. I am very impressed with the quality of the photos so far and have been trying to get to grips with using the manual setting. The problem is that the software disk supplied seems faulty and makes a funny noise in our laptop (Powerbook G4). I managed to install photostitch and image browser from the downloads section on the canon website but they seem very basic. I notice in the manual that when i plug the camera in, the computer should register this and a screen should pop up, giving me some options. This does not happen, when i plug it in the camera screen goes black and the green light next to the view finder flashes green for about 10 seconds. I am however able to import the pics with image capture which is the basic mac application but this is extremely slow. I know there's no fault with the cam as it works on our PC, just not on the mac. Plus we cannot import these raw photos (cr2) into photoshop cs3 as it says it does not support this file type. Can anyone please help.

Many thanks

L.Dudley

You need to have the latest RAW converter installed. I think it's 4.4 now. I don't tend to plug in the camera but transfer via a card reader. Much easier.

Welcome!

I can't help with your Mac problem but I can tell you that you will need to download Adobe Camera Raw version 4.3.1 from the Adobe downloads site. CS3 was released before the G9 came out and the version of ACR that was shipped then would not have had support for the G9.

I think you ought to take this up with Canon as my understanding is that unless you have DPP installed on your computer, you won't be able to download and install any future updates. (I assume your other disks run quietly.) My guess is that you'll will require proof of purchase etc. when approaching Canon.

Warped, or not properly seated ... more likely the latter ... try again! Sometimes discs can give the impression of being fitted properly when only 2 of the 3 clips are engaged. If so you will hear a sort of scraping noise, probably even when turning the disc by hand before pushing the drawer in ... it's worth doing that anyway, if the disc is faulty you may be able to see the irregularity.

I think you should take it up with the retailer - your contract is with them, not Canon, and they are obliged to make good any fault.

Thats strange? My new G9 raw pics came up in Bridge in my CS3 without any problems at all. Maybe I was just lucky because I haven't downloaded anything from Adobe's site.

Hi guys, many thanks for the replies. I am going to get a PCI card reader so that will bypass the issue of the laptop recognising the camera. I guess then my next issue is opening the cr2 files in Photoshop. I downloaded the 4.4.1 plugin which gave me the same error message about Photoshop not recognising the file format as soon as it installed. So after reading the reply on here I downloaded the plugin 'camera raw.8bi' which i couldnt open but after some research i saw that i need to put it into the plugins folder under application support/adobe/plugins/cs3. So I tried this and opened Photoshop but itgave me the same error message. Can anyone help?

Have you deleted the old 'camera raw.8bi'?

Not sure where the plugins go on a Mac but it seems right. You are sure that you downloaded the Mac and not the PC version?

I've just discovered that you can order a Canon original kit (manual, software CD) from EOS Magazine - web page.

That for my own model isn't listed but a phone call and it's on its way.

Is it not time that Micro$oft updated it's Raw File Viewer to allow viewing of raw images from the G9? After all, the G9 has been out for quite a while now.

I assume that owners of other recent Canon models suffer the same problem?
