Photoshop Elements 6 Question
      #661950 - 02/06/2008 17:21

When I have two RAW files in Photoshop CS2, I can make one dark, the other one lighter, apply a mask and then the gradient tool so that I have, for example a darker sky on a brighter foreground. How would I be able to get this effect in Photoshop Elements 5 or 6?

Sounds like a layermask might be what you are after.
I would edit the 2 shots to get the desired effects in each and then copy-paste one into the other. Then apply the layermask to one and mask out the parts of that I don't want.

And as it just so happens here is a layermask for elements 5 and 6

Yes, but can I achieve it just with PSE 6?

Without the layer mask?
Elements straight out of the box - I don't think so. The layering editing is limited, the best you could try would be seletive cutting and pasting followed by creative blurring to merge the cut lines. A lot of work that might or might not pay off

You should be able to achieve the same effect with by using the eraser tool to 'rub out' the areas of the top layer that you don't want. Set the eraser to a very low value, use a soft edge brush and set the flow to a low value and take your time. More or less the same end result should be possible though it's fiddlier and there's touch less control and finesse.

IIRC Elements has the Quickmask option (the one that covers everything with a red mask) You can use this along with the gradient fill to produce graduated selections that can the be cut using the Ctrl+X command.

Alternatively there's always The GIMP...

Although I would recomend the layer mask (it not hard to install) the answer is yes you can by using a clipping layer.

Have your two layers showing in the layers pallet

1-Click on the background layer and add a levels adjustment layer do not make any adjustment to the levels.

2- Click on the top layer and choose from the top bar Layer > Group with previous or use Ctrl+G.

3- Click on the Adjustment layer mask and use the brush or gradiant and black paint to reveal and white to hide..just like a layer mask.

I have enclosed a screen grab for you to understand better.
