I know that the site sometimes doesn't deal very well with marking messages as read, but in the last couple of days it seems to have given up entirely on this function. I thought it might be something that I have done, but I have looked through all my "User Options" and can see no problems there.
Are other having the same problem?

It's been utter crap for a few days, even after flushing cookies, etc., it's still utter crap. I think the whole forum (software, not content) needs flushing, and the knob-jockey that sanctioned it's creation in the first place, and the eejit that insists it should remain, and the plum who can't see the benefits of using a proprietary application, and anyone else involved in that 'lack of intelligence driven' decision process... Now, who have I missed out... Whoever they are they're [****]?

It's been c**p since the new software - searches are now completely pointless, so I don't bother anymore.

I usually find that if you start with the government of the day, then the police and then the BBC, you'll oover the usual suspects for blame.
On a work front, being in Sales I find that blaming Product and Operations invariably does the trick.

For the sake of a few dollar$ (or nothing at all!) we could have a stable application with more user/mod/admin friendly features, but no.
Still, could be worse... couldn't it?

SMF 2.0 looks good, if the beta is anything to go by. It has some nice features like moderator approval of posts before they go online for users who are being 'watched' - just the thing to keep disgruntled Olympus users and lippy Yorkshiremen in their place ...
The best thing about the AP Forums is the community. It would be a shame to pi$$ it off for the sake of 'a ha'pence of tar', or, as you say, a free stable application.
Somebody pull the communication cord!

I think the problem is that large commercial organizations just don't use free OTS things like that. Because they stand to lose or gain so much more than smaller businesses they keep tight a rein on anything concerning their corporate image (not necessarily for the better, but anyway...) and a website/internet forum is just the sort of thing they would want to keep entirely 'in-house'. They would probably no more use an OTS forum package than run off their annual report using a free MS Word template and standard fonts. If you're Joe Bloggs the plumber you knock up your stationery, signs, and so on using any old resources, but if you're AOL-Time Warner you want to have ownership and control over the way your business is presented to the world. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't still make a pig's breakfast of that presentation. ;-)

Ahhh but ... this is an 'off the shelf' forum, albeit not a free one, and not particularly up-to-date!
Can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, but I did look it up a year or two ago, and have a good look through the manual to see what's available (which is why I whinge every year or so about enabling RSS here).
Update - it's UBB.Threads:-
Quote:
Tons of Features! Unlimited Forums Integrated Portal Integrated Photo Gallery (UBB.Gallery) Database Backend Fully Templated RSS Syndication of content Unlimited Subforums CAPTCHA* many more!
http://www.ubbcentral.com/
It's not particularly expensive either.

I seem to recall Paul Lomax took the core application and made some changes for use by IPC, some (or all) of the changes were then fed back to the UBB developers. Whether that was an official partnership I know not.
Anyhoo, I've seen the future (allegedly) and, personally, I don't like the look of it (but that's just a cosmetic viewpoint). Whether it's more stable (I've yet to be allowed to look under the bonnet), and more to the point, whether we actually get it, is unknown - we were supposed to have had it by now (no change there then).

Dontcha just ha - er - love it when tecchies start mess - adult - modifying proprietary software? Our IT bunch once told me I couldn't have Office 2000 on my PC because "it doesn't work with our build of Windows"!
I see a lifetime Gold License for this forum is only $725 so maybe we could have a whip-round to help IPC out?
