Film still has a place but I suspect only in the brass and mahoganey world of large format. O.K. I will include all metal Linhof monorails.
The whole point of 35mm film was conveniance; digital now fulfills that roll. Film, in an appropriate format, is for ultimate quality, a quality I don't aspire to or need to store my memories.

I'm sure transparencies will hang on in there for a while yet. But with 14.9Mp sensors and more, it may not be for much longer.

Sorry guys - whilst digital (done properly) is a Big Step Up from 35mm there's still no competition with good quality 100ASA transparency film in MF or LF for the sort of subjects which they're appropriate for.
When we start seeing digital backs in 6x9 cm format, at a price which even the poorer third world countries can afford, then film will be finished.

I think your right. The quality of the image depends on the image size not the number of pixels. Only the full frame (FX) cameras math the quality of of 35mm. For the next two or three years no affordable digital camera will match the quality of a second hand Bronica picked up for the cost of an entry level bridge camera. For the cost of a DSLR you could aford the film and processing as well!

I was on a photography trip to Harris last week (no advertising who with). 9 people, 3 shooting digital (2 SLR, 1 Phase 1), 6 film (5 Velvia, 1 Reala).
Interestingly, there were plenty of pocket digital cameras in use to try out compositions before setting up and making an exposure.

Surely that's a bit of a sweeping statement. Have a look at an A2 print from a D300 at 1600ISO, then one from a 35mm neg of HP5 souped to the same speed.

I'm taking both a film Nikon and a digi Pentax to Japan in a couple of days time. I will take (conservative guess) 10 or 12 times more pictures on the Pentax, but expect 80% of my 'best' shots to be ones shot on film. I'm hoping to maybe even get my hands on a 'new' film camera out there too. As a certain group on Flickr says, film isn't dead, it just smells funny. I feel no need to replace or supplement my digital box, but the prospect of a MF or even LF film camera is quite mouthwatering.
It must be my age...

I've bought 3 film cameras in the last 12 months, but they've all been second hand as the prices of second hand gear is so low.
There seems to be a fair whack of film gear shifting on ebay, but very few people buying new because of the huge difference in price.
