Tamron 28-300mm VC Di Lens, any good?
      #642202 - 12/04/2008 18:00

Hi all i currently use a sigma 28-300mm lens on my EOS400D and although i am happy with it i find alot of the time if i am using it near to the 300mm end i have to use a fast shutter speed or suffer camera shake, i was wondering if anyone has bought or tried the tamron 28-300mm VC Di lens. I have tried to find a review of it but not been successfull.

Cheers in advance

Did you try a tripod, resting the lens on a wall or someone's shoulder to steady it, ...It's perfectly normal to need a fast shutter speed when hand-holding a camera fitted with a long lens.

Image stabilization can help but is not a perfect solution; the effect is limited, though you may find you can usually get away with say 1/60 sec at 300mm rather than having to go to 1/500 sec; also image stabilization does not compensate for blur caused by a subject which is moving.

Did you consider the Canon 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS lens which is very reasonably priced (around £200 in the shops) and is probably less of a compromise optically than the "superzoom" type lenses? If you want to replace the Sigma completely, you'll need something to cover the wide end too, the Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS at around £120 would be the perfect partner - but avoid the old non-IS version as it's not noted for its image quality!

Thanks for the advice, i do use a monopod but i find it annoying and it often gets in the way but it does help.
I already own a canon 18-55mm which came with the camera but i only use it for landscapes and portraits etc.
I would like to find a direct replacement for the sigma 28-300mm as it is not very often off the camera and i find it very usefull.
