Off to Madeira in a few weeks.
Any 'must photograph' areas?
Looking in the guide books and online there's lots of great gardens and rocky peaks.

Just about everywhere you look Fen.
The local bus services are excellent (you buy a multi-journey card) and nowhere is too far to go. There are superb cycle trails and mountain walks. Very few flat bits, but I know that won't bother you. Avoid the tourist bus trips, they go in convoy so you may find several hundred people all dumped in the same place at the same time.

Hi Fen, It has to be Camera das Lobos.( sorry ). Seriously though, I hit it at flower festival time. They stretch nets across the narrow streets from the bedroom windows and fill with flowers! Luuuverly. Cheers Bill.

As you said, the gardens at Monte (Sp?) are definitely worth a go, as are the "president's" garden overlooking the harbour in Funchal (look out for the lizards).
Also, if you're feeling fit, it's well worth a walk up to the summit of Pico Rivo. Not too bad really when you can drive to the top of Pico Arreiro, which is higher than Ben Nevis, and walk up from there.
And we enjoyed the Valley of the Nuns too.
HTH, enjoy....

The Island has plenty of great places, if you fancy an early start one day a trip to the top of Pico Arreiro for sun rise is worth it but you will need a car.
When we were there the first week May in 2005 there was the Maderia rally, which produced some interesting shots, as well as some moments on the roads as they were between stages.
