What settings do people use for sharpness etc instead of the `default` ones?
And do they really make any noticable difference to the end result?

I have to confess that I didn't know that control existed. After reading your post I looked it up in the manual.
Even now that I know that it exists I doubt that I would use it. These days I'm using RAW almost exclusively and doing my own processing.

Hi,
I tend to use +1 sharpness and sometimes along with it +2 contradt. But I I put the 28-100 that came with my 5L on it, I use +2 sharpness. Yeah, I still haven't gone 'round buying some good wide or wide zooms for it. But the Sigma 70-300 APO DG hasn't stopped impressing me I have to say. Cheap as chips and sharp as razors.

I set the sharpness,contrast,and saturation to +1 and used that setting for the pictures on sunday (27th)for the Vulcan and Foxton locks pictures.I can definately see the difference.
What do other think?

They look great.The colours get slightly deeper, particularly the blue skies. That's one of the reasons I increase contrast and saturation in some situations.
What lenses do you have? I am thinking of getting a Sigma 15-30 EX DC and maybe a Tamron 18-250 for those reportage/photojournalism type stuff.
I increase the contrast to +2 on mine because of the average lenses (along with sharpness at +1)
PS: I would also like a Sigma 150mm EX DC macro and a 50mm (Minolta or another good brand), but the 50mm is a hard find.

All the pictures that I took on Sunday of the Vulcan and Foxton Locks, were taken using the Sigma 10-20 Ex.
I have 4 Sigmas (10-20 EX, 18-50EX, 28-300, 400 f5.6) and 1 Tamron (90mm macro).
I would like to get something to fill the gap between 300 and 400mm, and I am thinking of the Sigma 170-500.But I would also like the Minolta/Sony A/F 500 mirror.

Nice kit! I had the 10-20 in mind in fact, but at the mo, I got the usual problem, the budget. Having said that, I just bought a Minolta 28mm f2.8 I found on ebay and I am eyeing a 50mm f1.7. I may still go for the 15-30EX .

I am tempted to buy a 7D second hand as my first DSLR. Could anyone tell me what size the images it takes would print up to, with a decent lens?
Would I get A3 size out of it?

Yes
I have managed to get this size with no problems, I had the resolution up to its max of 3008x2000.
I have just got the A700, but would have been happy with a second 7d if this had not come out.

Sorry for a daft question but was that in RAW or JPEG? Or is that irrelevant.
My local lab scans film at 3088 on the longest side so I'll have a go at printing that size from a scanned neg.

It was JPEG extra fine.
I have only taken one picture in RAW and then in JPEG.
I personally could not see any difference so I just stick to JPEG extra fine.

Hi Gordon, my thoughts would run to a Tamron 55-200/4-5.6, (very cheap but good) and a S/H Tamron 200-400/5.6, for the Mirror look out for a S/H Sigma 600/8. The 20-400 is a tad lighter than the Siggy 170-500 and is a constant 5.6 and scores about the same on the Dyxum reviews. Help the budget by ditching the 28-300 and possibly the 400/5.6.

I have a Tokina 80-400 in MAF mount, the earlier model, discontinued prob about the time Sony bought KM, they still come up from time to time. It's worth keeping an eye on Ffordes, Walters, Mr Cad and a few other S/H dealers. I got the Sigma 600/8 from Ffordesfor about £150, the 80-400 Tok was a bit dearer, can't remember which dealer that was from tho.
Easy to check if a lens is available in MAF/Sony, look in the lens DB on Dyxum.

I have had a couple printed at A1 even. Taken with that very impressive and very cheap 70-300mm APO DG.
