Yashica-Mat questions
      #596465 - 15/01/2008 23:23

Hi Folks,

I've got an old Yashica-Mat COPAL-MXV which I know nothing about.

Anyone have any info about them, or can point me in the right direction (websites)?

I only seem to be finding stuff about people wanting to sell or enquire about prices

Many thanks,

I used to have a number of good YashicaMat links, but when I checked them just now they were mostly dead. :-(

One that wasn't, and also this (link on the previous page) - might be worth a look.

Copal is the shutter maker, and MXV indicates bulb and electronic flash synch, and the self-timer. The 'Mat' cameras all (I believe) had the four-element Yashinon taking lens (a decent Tessar design - not up to the standard of the Planars and Xenotars that Rollei were using, but entirely respectable nonetheless).

I have a similar variant model; the Yashica 635. This has the lesser Yashikor 3 element lens which I have always found to be really good and it also has a 35mm adapter set so you can use 35mm film as well in portrait format. I love this camera and despite having far more sophisticated gear, consider it to be one of my favourites to use. I have taken prize-winning shots with mine and I strongly urge you to use and enjoy your Yashica-Mat which is a top-end version.

Ah, this is the same model as I used to have..

From here.

Had tele and wide-angle adapter lenses for it as well. Nice camera - not bulky and easy to use with the thumb wheels at either side and the reading on top of the lens. Had a nice case with it as well - I do miss that camera

Here's a stripped one.
Something else about cleaning etc.

I've got two Yashicamat 124G cameras. One mint with lovely black leather case. The other I bought for spares - it is very clean but the top had a bash and so the meter is dead but otherwise it is still usable. Somewhere, I've also got the genuine Yashicamat wide and tele converters. It's a great little camera and was a low-cost entry into medium format for many years. It doesn't have the same quality and feel as a Rolleiflex but the lens is pretty good and I've taken many fine pictures with mine.

I had them as well - hens teeth spring to mind (can't say I've ever seen any advertised anywhere)
