Next for the operating theatre
      #579827 - 06/12/2007 20:12

I'm just about to start a strip down and possible repair on an epsilon shuttered early MPP Microcord. It has four problems (excluding me and my screwdriver):

very dull mirrors which really need resilvering
focus knob does not move front panel
wind mechanism doesn't work
shutter only has one speed - very slow

This camera was part of a job lot bought at auction several years ago which included a severely broken Microflex and a largely dismantled Minolta Autocord. I think I paid £12 for the lot and sold the other two on ebay for £17 as spares so the Microcord doesn't owe me much but I'd like to be able to use it.

I have been googling for manuals and information, (the name Rog_Prov cropped up a few times in the results)but no substantial information so armed with a Rolleicord service manual and a big hammer I'm about to start dismantling.

Anyone here with practical experience that I can contact for help if things go pear shaped?

Mike, your best bet is probably to contact the MPP users' club There are many knowledgeable folk there and I'm sure you'll get help. I've a huge pile of the MPP Gazette magazine back numbers - but not to hand - I will look through them over the weekend to see if there's any articles helpful to your project - let you know if I find anything.

(The Rog_Prov you found is me - though you must have guessed that )

Hi Roger,

Yes, I did suspect that it was you

Anyway, the patient is doing well. I have taken the side plates off, removed the old grease and relubricated sparingly with a a non migrating light grease. The mirror has cleaned remarkably well with my dSLR sensor cleaning stuff. The wind problem is a broken spring so I have made a new one, the focus problem was simply a loose collet. Shutter has come back to life so I will leave well alone, I'm not too worried about cleaning and relubing leaf shutters but don't do it for fun.

Main problem on reassembly will be undoing damage caused during a previous 'repair' by someone. One drilled out screw, several burred heads and leatherette liberally stuck on with evostick. Nothing major, just a nuisance.

So in the near future I will further increase my reputation for eccentricity wandering around shooting a test film with a TLR.

Good for you.

I like to do things like that, too, preferably somewhere there are lots of people with digicams around ... some of them even take a polite interest in kit that's older than me

See if I care

I get my share of laffs back at those people who try to take photos of scenery half a mile away in poor light, relying on the weak flash built into their matchbox sized digicam, peering into a tiny screen held at arm's length and being buffetted around by a gale.

At least I get sharp pictures.

Far more fun using a TLR too!

Two images from the first (and very probably last) roll through the recently repaired Microcord. It's all too much trouble to use I'm afraid, I'll stick to my M6

Isn't it funny how two places can have some similarities. There's a cafe-cum-book shop on the river at Marlborough that looks remarkably like the building at the extreme right of the first picture...

Never been to Stamford. I think the only place in Lincolnshire I've been is Grimsby... and it rained... a lot........
