Hi there,
I've just been given some kit by my parents.
They include a Vivitar MTV777-MAGIC, WIDE 0.6x lense Tamron 75-250mm F/38-4.5 ADAPTALL 2 lense Pentax ME Super Camera Pentax SMC -A 1:1.7 50mm lense
Now to be honest I don't have a clue about any of this kit. But i would like to know 1. is this kit good quality? 2. is it worth anything ? 3. what does the MTV777-MAGIC lense do?
Finally I have just bought a Canon 350D so is there anyway the telephoto lense for the Pentax can be adapted for the Canon? If anybody could recommend a first new lense to replace a standard 350d lense it would also be appreciated.
I appreciate any advice/help anybody can give.
thanks igerguy

Pentax ME camera- not bad at all- fairly light and relatively simple to use classic of its time the lens is ok too the magic thingy you mention sounds like an adapter to put on the front of a lens to give a wider angle. No doubt you could find an adapter to use the lenses but why not consider buying a pentax DSLR then you don't need an adapter...(as you can tell I'm a pentax man)

The Vivitar thing is a wide angle adapter designed to give a lens a wider angle of view than it normally has. It's a sort of cheap alternative to a proper wide angle lens - usually with pretty poor performance to boot.
The Pentax ME and 50mm lens are a nice pair. Probably not worth all that much these days but well worth running film through. I've got the ME's cousin the MV with f2 50mm and it's a nice camera to use...
There's an Adaptall to EF converter here. Focusing will of course be manual and exposure metering will be in stopped down mode ie you set the speed with the lens aperture ring set to the desired value which means as there can be no mechanical coupling to the body the aperture will be closed down to the set value. This will make the viewfinder dark so focus before metering.
As the 350D is a recent EOS the metering system should automatically set itself to stop down mode - indicated by a 00 reading for the aperture. You can use this mode in either Av or M mode, in Av the camera will automatically set a suitable speed for the set lens aperture while in M mode you can adjust either the speed, the lens aperture or both until the correct exposure is indicated by the 'finder display. If the camera does not show 00 when the lens is mounted use the body based aperture controls to manually set it to 00 (or possibly 01) but I don't think this will be necessary.

Assuming you mean to replace the 18-55mm kit lens you might like to look at either the Sigma 17-70mm or the Canon EF-s 17-85mm...

There's also an adaptor here which will allow you to use Pentax K mount lenses on an EOS body. Another one here has a built in chip which gives focus confirmation in the viewfinder.

A bit late for that as he's already (very sensibly) bought an EOS350D! ...(as you can tell I'm a Canon man )
