but does anyone know what this is?
This one is only the second that I've seen and I've been unable to find any reference to it on the web. Any ideas?

Any clues? Like the name around the front of the lens? any marking on the base? The ASA dial on the front reminds me of a camera that I saw a long time ago, but I just can't remember what it was.

The Olympus Pens had an ASA dial very similar. But this wretched looking excuse is hardly in the same league.
I don't know the camera and I would have thought that only a Canon lover would have had any interest in such a mundane looking object

Well, the lens is M42 mount and the only marking on the base is "Made in Japan"

I think its one of the myriad of Cosina cameras badged under a multitude of names. Here's one that's close.

This camera was sold under several names including the Ricoh TLS (see AP 20th August 1975). In this case, if the lens is a Sigma 39-80mm f3.5, it's a Sigma Mk.1 (How did they come up with that name!). It was marketed in 1975. "Due to be available in September/October this year" AP, 23 July 1975. I doubt it sold well as they are not often seen for sale.

It is indeed a Sigma Mark 1.
As you say, it can't have been a huge success. It isn't even mentioned in McKeown's and I couldn't find any reference to it on the web.
I've seen the same camera branded as Chinon, Ricoh, Prinzflex and Porst. The first Porst I saw had a small Chinon badge alongside the shutter speed/ASA dial, so I assumed they were all just rebadged Chinons. The second Porst I saw had a Ricoh badge in the same place, now I'm totally confused.

Yes that is very similar in many respects, but I don't think they're the same. I've compared the Sigma side by side with a number of Cosina clones and the body shape is quite different.

My first camera was a Sigma Mk 1, received as an 18th birthday present back in 1978. I used it for several years before trading up, but for some reason I kept the case and instruction book. I unearthed these a while ago and then for the sake of nostalgia tracked down a good clean Mk 1 and 39-80mm lens on eBay. I haven't got round to putting a film through it yet, but when I do I'll be able to pretend I'm 18 again!
